Cllr Claire Harris for Markfield, Stanton & Field Head reports:

Budget

This month’s budget discussions are significant, particularly with national changes that may have local repercussions. The potential increase in VAT on private education raises concerns, especially given the high cost of living and limited school placements, which could strain school admissions. Additionally, the proposed family farm tax may jeopardise many farms, threatening food security and potentially driving up food prices. We may face challenging times as we await the full effects of the budget.

Halloween

Halloween festivities were enjoyable this year, with children displaying commendable behavior. Homes without decorations were respected, and the village showcased an array of impressive costumes, including a giant T.Rex and a group of bananas, along with the Mario Brothers. The celebrations continued the next day with Mercenfeld Primary's annual Halloween disco, where children had a wonderful time, likely ensuring a restful weekend for them.

Beech Walk

By the time this article is published, I hope the flooding issue on Beech Walk will have been resolved, as it is scheduled for attention on November 5th. If not addressed, I will escalate my ongoing complaint with Severn Trent.

50th Anniversary

I had the pleasure of attending the Markfield Community Association's celebration at the Congregational Church for Hinckley and Bosworth’s 50th Anniversary. The event was filled with laughter, entertainment, delicious food, and plenty of cake. Volunteers were acknowledged for their contributions to the MCA over the years and received certificates from Borough Councillors and Mr. Ron Grantham. I appreciate the invitation and look forward to the75th anniversary celebrations.

Hill Hole Community Woodland project

The Hill Hole Community Woodland Project at Hill Hole Nature Reserve is set to advance this winter, with a planting date to be confirmed soon. Various constraints have limited planting on this site, but there will be opportunities for increased planting in the future.

If you would like to get involved, please do get in contact.

Christmas Light Turn On

I look forward to seeing you all at the Christmas light turn on, at the Green, in December.
